When I see a man dressed in a Tuxedo, or a lady dressed in an evening gown, I immediate respect them because they have enough respect for themselves and others to present themselves in a positive and appealing manner. I tend to treat them in a respectful manner.
When I see a man dressed in a suit, or a lady dressed in after 5 or business attire, I immediate respect them because they have enough respect for themselves and others to present themselves in a positive and appealing manner. I tend to treat them in a respectful manner.
When I see a man dressed in jeans, or a lady dressed the same way, I take pause to see how they conduct themselves. If they are comfortable and affable, they EARN my respect. They show a relaxed respect for themselves and thereby earn my respect. I tend to treat them in a respectful manner. I give them a chance to earn my respect thru their actions.
When I see a man dressed in a manner that reflects a lack of self-respect, I tend to extend to them the same respect they show for themselves. Their friends may know them as being good people, but their lack of respect for others tends to say “I don’t care what YOU think”, yet they seem to demand respect. I’m thinking they won’t get it from me.
I do not owe anyone respect. I do reflect their own self-respect. If you want respect, first respect yourself, second, respect others.
If you dress like a slob or a convict, expect to be treated like one. Your respect for yourself will shine thru and you will receive the respect you EARN…

I can earn your respect just by putting on a suit?
Cooool. That’s so much easier than actually doing something.
I build sets in the theatre industry. Usually I am in battered jeans and a torn T-shirt, spattered with paint and sawdust. I may go a week without shaving, and I can often put off a haircut for months.
But I worked hard and earned good grades in graduate school, I have never cheated on my taxes and I support my children financially and emotionally. I vote in every election, even the tiny uncontested school board elections.
I volunteer at the Crisis Center and I was an officer in a Boy Scout troop for five years, until my son earned his Eagle.
I’m sorry that you would not respect me if you saw me in my painting clothes. I think you’re missing out on some good people by judging them so shallowly.
