This cartoon that supposedly “proves” the existence of White Privilege and institutional racism is making the social media rounds and impressing the gullible. While all it really does is demonstrate an inability to understand statistics. In an attempt to bring fact to fiction we offer our comments in the right column below:

The same stupid “white privilege” claims that continue to ignore reality. Why is there such disparity in incarceration rates? Couldn’t have anything to do with HIGHER RATES OF OFFENDING, could it? Of course not, ’cause “white privilege.” Even if it also means higher rates of victimization for non-whites. Nope, no mention of that, except for a digression about “intraracial homicide” and even then you have to lie by omission, not mentioning that the vast majority of interracial homicides are black on white, despite whites outnumbering blacks by 6 to 1.
So here’s some fact-based advice: you are a fucking liar and a racist shill.
Actually, you don’t seem to understand statistics and neither does this comic. As whites outnumber every race in America 2 or 3 to 1, the highest rates of offenders are White by sheer numbers. Because African Americans are a smaller percentage of the country, more attention is paid to the number of Black people who go to jail, if blacks were not a minority, the incarceration rate wouldn’t matter. Also, this is about how you don’t recognize your own privilege and get defensive or angry when it is discussed. You played right into their hands here and additionally made yourself seem racist by implying that most black people are criminals. You are privileged because if you walk into room no one would dare ask you to speak for all white people. You are privileged because you don’t have to seem exceptional when you do well because you are a person of color. You are privileged because society at large (mostly white people) do not make automatic assumptions about who you are, what you can achieve, and what you will do. You call out the number of interracial homicide, but most homicides are committed by white people, because white oriole outnumber everyone in America. I don’t make statements like all white peoples are murderers because of this statistic, just as I am sure you don’t assume all people of color are criminals because you see so many on the news.

I’m still waiting for someone to explain the supposed statistic that a POC has a 44-50% chance of going to prison in his or her lifetime. Seriously? You’re trying to tell me that a high enough percentage of persons of color are going to be arrested and tried that 44% of the entire population is going to end up in prison at some point in their life?
I always thought American “white privileged” could best be seen in the mass graveyards on the bluffs above Omaha Beach.
