My criteria for a good hotel is easy access to pool halls and nightlife entertainment, yet quiet enough to get a good nights sleep, comfy bed, and good value for money.
As a major city, 5-star hotels cost about the same as they do in other major cities, but high quality 4 and 3 star hotels can be had for surprisingly good deals, even some 2 stars are very acceptable. Different strokes for different folks.
These are all hotels I’ve stayed at and enjoyed.
FIVE STAR HOTELS
JW Marriott Hotel Bangkok – $170
If you just ‘have to’ stay at a big brand hotel with a big price tag, then the JW is a nice one. It’s right around the block from the infamous Nana Plaza and bars, but on a ‘respectable’ street of its own. But seriously, is the JW a good ‘value?’ Not really…
Grand Sukhumvit Hotel Bangkok – $79
Just as nice as the Marriott, a short walk from the train station and Nana nightlife area. Right in the middle of the party area, but on a quiet secluded back street. Beautiful pool and a huge fitness center. If you want 5-stars, stay here not the Marriott.
FOUR STAR HOTELS
S15 Sukhumvit Hotel – $87
The S15 is right on the main drag, across the street from Hustlers pool hall, and an easy walk to the bars at Nana Plaza or Soi Cowboy. They also have a fitness center, spa, and a snooker table on location. Comfy beds too.
Dream Bangkok – $70
This is a very unique hotel and a deal if you don’t mind a short walk off the main street. If you appreciate being away from the hustle and bustle, this place is down a quiet lane away from the main street. Modern art style, blue lighting in the rooms, stunning pool, this place is cool+1.
Grand President – $44
Yeah, 44 bucks for a 4-star hotel. Now to be honest the ‘Standard’ Rooms that go for $44 are probably 3 star at best, but the “deluxe’ rooms in Tower 1 are only $50, and the place does come with a couple of nice swimming pools to choose from. Located on a lively street (Soi 11) a short walk from the main street and train station. This is where I stayed on my first ever trip, ahh, memories.
THREE STAR HOTELS
The Key Bangkok Hotel – $53
Very handy location, just a short walk from the train station, a couple of massive shopping centers, and the serious pool halls. Also a bit insulated from the rowdy nightlife areas on a residential street. Lot’s of street food vendors make this one of my favorite locations.
Imm Fusion Sukhumvit – $31
This is a funky little hotel, far, far away from the tourist area, but very close to a train station making everything just a short trip away. Can really get a taste of living among the locals at this place. Has a nice pool, on-site massage, a fitness center, and free breakfast buffet. The rooms are a bit small and dark, and the TV’s are very small, but other than that its a great deal. Only other drawback is that if you are out late at night, you’ll need a taxi to get back home.
iCheck Inn Nana – $39
I booked this one off the internet because the pictures looked nice, and the place is in fact a nice little boutique hotel. But it is also at the end of one of the seediest streets in the city. I was honestly a little embarrassed when the taxi turned in. Soi 7/1 hosts the infamous Eden Club, and numerous other ‘sexy’ bars have sprung up around it. So if you want a nice place on a naughty street, iCheck Inn is the place.
TWO STAR HOTELS
Town Lodge Hotel Bangkok – $25
You might think that a 2-star hotel has just got to be terrible, but you’d think wrong. The Town Lodge is actually pretty nice, the rooms are stylish and clean, the staff is friendly, and they even have a pool table in the bar downstairs. So what’s not to like? Well, it’s a 10 minute walk from the main street and there isn’t much down there. Given the address, your taxi driver may express doubts that anything is at the end of the lane, but it is. Also no elevator. Other than that, Town Lodge is a hidden budget gem.
ONE STAR HOTELS
Hey, even I have limits. Never stayed at a one star, but there are some clean hostels around for about $12 so I’m told.
WEARY TRAVELLER SPECIAL HOTEL
If you’re like me and can’t sleep on an airplane, you’re going to be feeling zonkered after the long flight over and will probably want a bed ASAP. Here’s a few hotels within minutes of the airport. Easy enough to take a taxi downtown the next day.
Grand Inn Come Hotel – $32
Decent 3-star hotel, 15 minutes form the airport, and… it has a snooker club in the basement in case you wake up at odd hours and need something to do.
Think you can do better? Give it your best shot…
